The washing machine still works, but sometimes stops before the final spin. You are planning to sell it and wonder whether a repair would bring a better offer.
Start with two questions: what is the fault, and what would repairing it change? A higher selling price is useful only if it covers the extra cost and effort.
Before paying for a repair, request an assessment of the appliance in its current condition. Then compare that offer with a realistic post-repair estimate. Some buyers may decline a faulty unit altogether.
Describe the problem without guessing the cause
“Stops during the spin cycle” is useful information. “Needs a cheap sensor” is a diagnosis unless a technician has confirmed it.
Explain what happens, when it started and whether it happens every time. Mention any displayed error code exactly as it appears.
For a refrigerator, distinguish cooling problems from a dispenser fault. For a cooker, identify the affected function rather than saying everything is broken.
Useful details include:
- Exact brand and model.
- Approximate age, if known.
- The observed fault and how often it occurs.
- Previous repair work and whether the fault returned.
- Available service paperwork.
- Your preferred collection date.
Do not run a damaged appliance simply to create a demonstration. Where operation may be unsafe, share the history and arrange professional assessment.
Ask whether the buyer accepts that condition
Not every used-appliance buyer purchases faulty machines. Acceptance can depend on the model, fault, missing parts and collection arrangements.
Ask directly before discussing collection: “Would you consider this appliance with the fault described?”
If the answer is yes, find out whether the estimate is provisional. A photograph cannot settle every question about an intermittent problem.
Avoid interpreting “we buy washing machines” as a promise to purchase every machine. Confirm your individual item.
Get the complete repair quotation
A useful repair quote explains the proposed work and its cost. Ask whether the amount includes inspection, labour, parts and any transport.
Also ask what happens if the first repair does not resolve the problem. There is a difference between a confirmed fault and an exploratory parts replacement.
Record the expected completion date. A repair that finishes after your moving deadline may not help, even when the price seems reasonable.
For model-specific support, use the manufacturer’s service channel. For example, Bosch owners can start with Bosch UAE’s repair service. Other brands should use their own support channels.

Compare what you keep after costs
Use this simple calculation:
Post-repair sale proceeds − repair and extra selling costs = estimated amount kept.
Compare that result with the amount you would keep from selling in the current condition. Apply the same collection assumptions to both.
Here is an entirely hypothetical example. These figures are not Dubai market prices or an offer from our business.
| Option | Illustrative amount |
|---|---|
| Offer in current condition, with collection included | AED 400 |
| Possible offer after successful repair, with collection included | AED 650 |
| Total repair cost | AED 200 |
| Amount kept after repair | AED 450 |
| Potential improvement over the current-condition offer | AED 50 |
In this example, the extra AED 250 selling price leaves only AED 50 more. That small margin depends on the repair succeeding and the buyer accepting the resulting condition.
If another AED 75 cost appears, the repair route leaves AED 375. The headline selling price stays higher, but the seller keeps less.

A small repair is not automatically worthwhile
A missing shelf may look like an easy fix. But the correct replacement could cost more than the buyer adds to the offer.
Ask the buyer whether that specific repair changes the assessment. Do this before ordering parts solely for resale.
Cleaning accessible surfaces and gathering missing accessories are different from repairing a fault. Follow the appliance’s care instructions, and do not hide damage beneath cosmetic work.
Similarly, a major repair is not automatically a bad decision. The result depends on the actual quote, machine condition and buyer interest. Avoid rules based only on the appliance’s original purchase price.
Consider the time as well as the money
Each route has a practical cost. Repair may involve an inspection visit, parts delivery and a second test.
Selling in the current condition may mean fewer interested buyers. It may also involve an inspection before anyone confirms a price.
If you have a handover deadline, write down the latest workable collection date. Our appliance collection planning guide can help you coordinate the sale with moving arrangements.
Do not postpone every other decision while waiting for one uncertain repair. Ask when the technician can give a firm answer.
Keep the repair history visible
If you repair the appliance, keep the invoice and describe the work accurately. Explain what was replaced and when the machine was tested afterwards.
A repaired appliance is not the same as a new one. Avoid calling it “fully refurbished” unless you can explain what that process included.
If you sell without repairing, disclose the known fault before the buyer travels. Include it in the written item description and agreed collection details.
Saying “sold as is” does not tell someone what is wrong. A clear description does.
What if nobody wants the appliance?
Ask whether a relevant repair business wants the unit for assessment or parts. Do not assume that this creates a resale value.
If reuse is not practical, arrange an appropriate appliance collection or recycling service. Confirm acceptance and any charge before scheduling it.
That is a separate decision from selling a working appliance. A buyer’s refusal does not mean every collection provider will also refuse it.
